How did Sam know about the machine and write the books is my question.
Weiss already stated he's older than he seems. I'm guessing he's VERY old, but I could be wrong. I don't think he's one of the first people, but he knows too much. I'd be willing to guess that there's only one of him in both universes.

This was a great episode. Fantastic acting talent with Anna Torv to show emotional involvement and emotional distancing with Peter all at the same time, without indicating any decisions about him one way or the other. A very delicate touch, a deep sensibility.
